as i assume that people who read blogs relating to testing are also going to be into testing and pushing themselves i feel these are appropriate.

pushing your skill set

simple ways to make yourself far cleverer

get into it people.

well, i finally finished reading effective software testing and as i expected it is good. i found when i was reading that sometimes i wanted more meat, but it obviously wasn't written as that kind of book, more as a guide to improve your testing and so i will use it as such. i need to go back a re-read the sections i noted for such action, but i am glad i put the time in, and am even more glad i decided to try speed reading. i have software testing foundations, the study guide for ISTQB, here with me now and i am going to go get into it. then fish for dinner. got to boost that brain power. maybe i won't open that bottle of white tonight either. nah. baby steps...

Please do a follow up post to let us know how you get on brushing your teeth with your 'wrong' hand and taking a shower with your eyes closed

I also look forward to your blog posts being 40% smarter in future

On a serious note I wish the 'tester' where I work had your attitude

ambidextrous

well, i know the manual dexterity of my left hand is weak. i mess about with turntables and my ability to scratch with my left hand is almost non-existent. tonight it's the teeth. tomorrow i might try tying my shoelaces. and it is worth thinking about. if people who become blind can develop better hearing, and also develop a better sense of the world around them through touch and previous knowledge of their surroundings then why can't doing things with my eyes closed help exercise areas of my brain that i don't use enough.

on the serious note thanks for the compliment. this is the first IT job that i have had where i felt i was in a good position to develop a career. the others were all positions where the focus of the business was on something else eg education, psychology. but where i am now is all about IT. this is an excellent motivator. also the fact that there has been no formal testing done up to this point means I have to develop everything. and i get to use my bullshit mortgage processing experience and my sys dev knowledge all rolled into one. that and I have seen jobs listed in sydney for test analysts paying $120K. yeah, they are asking for 7 years testing experience, with mercury knowledge and ISEB/ISTQB certification. but i could more than double my salary in 7 years. and testing seems like a career that is unlikely to disappear. oh yeah, and i saw a job listed on apple.com for a testing with business level japanese to test the japan itunes music site. giddy up i say!

hang in there phil. i know someone will notice your efforts and you will be a test developer in no time.

time to brush my teeth.
