December 27, 2006 - A New Tool for Your Website or Blog - StatCounter

Posted in QA

I've been checking out a new tool on this blog - StatCounter.  Very nice!

From their web site:

A free yet reliable invisible web tracker, highly configurable hit counter and real-time detailed web stats. Insert a simple piece of our code on your web page and you will be able to analyse and monitor all the visitors to your website in real-time!

It's extremely simple to use, and there are lots of Statistics collected. From just a few months of use so far, I've learned

  • About 200 people per day read this blog (fewer on weekends).
  • The most popular article (by far) is "QA and Testing Interview Questions (and some answers)"
  • Most people arrive here from SQAForums.com.  A few get here via Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL Search, or Windows Live (using some unexpected keywords on occasion).
  • Some people stay for just a few seconds.  But about 40% stay for more than 5 minutes.
  • Most people who visit are either from the United States or India.  But so far, visitors have arrived from:
    • Argentina

  • Most visitors use Windows XP.   Some use Windows 2003 or 2000.  A few still use Windows 98 and ME.  A few more use OS X.  Very few use Linux.  Recently, I've seen some Windows Vista use occurring.
  • Almost everyone has Javascript enabled.

StatCounter.com offers this service free, if you limit yourself to just 500 log entries.  You can learn a lot from 500 entries, but if your web site has a lot more traffic, you'll want to upgrade to a larger quota (for a fee).
