March 10, 2008 - Any Problems Springing Ahead?

Posted in QA

There weren't many problems with last year's new end date for Daylight Saving Time.

And there don't seem to have been many problems with this year's earlier start.

Apparently, a million or so people in the Brooklyn and Queens area were affected by a Time Warner Cable problem that left their cable television programs mismatched with the onscreen guide.

The source of the problem, she said, was related to the set-top boxes, which unscramble the signals transmitted over cable. Some of the boxes were somehow askew, thrown by the adjustment to the new time, through human error, technical failure or gremlins yet to be identified.

Programs were not appearing in accordance with the onscreen guide, and people were calling in — some angry, but most just confused.

If that's the worst of it, the changeover to DST went smoothly this year.
