Earlier today, I went to login to Gmail and found that their sercurity certificate had expired at 11:53:40 AM.

That was unfortunate.

It would have been a lot more unfortunate if I were attempting to use an API or WebService with an expired certificate, where I would not have been able to just ignore the visible warning.

It's clearly not the first time this has happened (see: http://www.google.com/search?q=gmail+certificate+expired).
