• December 20, 2006 - Life of a Traveling Consultant

For the last few years I have been working for Consulting type companies.  At times it has been fun and others I wonder why I did this to myself.  Right now I'm out of my home town on a project and regretting the travel involved.  I do go home every weekend, but with the weather this time of year (December) in Colorado it can be a bit of a gamble.

Today there is a major snow storm in Colorado and I am wondering if I am going to be able to fly home tomorrow.  I will have to play the phone game with the airline and live on the "Standby" list for flights if my flight gets cancelled.  Oh joy!

So for anyone thinking about going into consulting/contracting you may have to travel for your work.  Just keep in mind that you will get "stuck" somewhere sometime, part of the personal price you pay for those "Consulting Dollars".

I agree that there are gambles in the life of a travelling consultant and it's been exhausting for me. But I have been so enriched by my experiences in travelling, both personal and professional, that I have to say that on the balance it has really worked out for me.

However, it is a different life, and it's nice to be in contact with others who share that experience.
