New Maniacs!May 4, 2012

Our new vacation home in Cape Neddick, Maine

I haven't written much recently. Pretty much all of my free time has been taken up completing the selection and purchase of a vacation home in Cape Neddick, Maine.

My wife and I have been vacationing in York, Maine on and off for around 20 years. We had always imagined what it would be like to own a place near the beach, but with our busy lives, the time was never right. This year, it was finally right. We have been very busy the past few months searching, finding, funding, purchasing, and moving. copyrightjoestrazzere

Where have you been, Mr Nairn?Thu 5 Apr 2012

I noticed with shock that it is over 2 years since I last posted a blog entry.  Why?

It is interesting that I have not stopped writing, just stopped posting here.  I looked at what I have written and each of the potential entries are:-

- Not complete, either in thinking, writing or both

- Internal to the company

- Dreadful!

Partly my enthusiasm for posting stuff sort of went away due to a number of factors.  In recent months I have re-discovered my enthusiasm and have started using my twitter account.  I  think I will start blogging again.

So, I will make this a short entry and hopefully get posting again more regularly.

One of the things that has got me more enthused recently (and I will probably blog on why my enthusiasm waned) was that I have been seeing more and more enthusiasm within my own test team in my new company and that has been a long hard slog.

I have been having some very interesting testing discussions with one tester in particular that has made me think hard and I always like to do that.  Some of the results of those discussions will make great blog entries!

Don't Fake Your Results!March 15, 2012

Of course the six years I blow off my test results, this happens

Hundreds, or even thousands, of drunk driving convictions could be overturned because the San Francisco Police Department had not properly tested its breathalyzers recently

Be better - be a Beta!

A while back I posted about being a Beta Tester

Beta testing can be a nice way to enhance your skills as a tester, and perhaps add to your resume.

Here are a few more opportunities.  As always, be careful out there in Beta land.

Have You Ever Taken The Crappy Path?February 28, 2012

Take The Crappy Path

Wikipedia defines the Happy Path as "a default scenario that features no exceptional or error conditions, and comprises the sequence of activities that will be executed if everything goes as expected."

Alan Page calls it "Simple inputs that should always work."

But as a professional tester, you should consider the Crappy Path.

Perhaps The Russian Space Agency Should Have Tested More?February 14, 2012

Not actually the Russian Mars Probe

The Russian Mars probe Phobos-Grunt launched on November 9th, 2011, was working immediately after launch.  But a command to start the engines wasn't successful. Instead, the spacecraft went into "safe mode" and was trapped in orbit until it splashed into the ocean two months later. copyrightjoestrazzere

Some Interview Questions YOU Should Consider AskingJanuary 17, 2012

Interview questions that YOU should ask

For most of the time during interviews, you are answering questions. But at some point during most interviews, you will be asked "Do you have any questions?" This is a critical time, since the interviewer will use your questions to find out what is important to you, and to see if it matches what is important to them.

Everyone wants to feel special!

Special Offers are advertisements displayed on your Kindle. You can purchase a subsidized version of a Kindle at a discount if you are willing to accept these Special Offers. But at first you couldn't view these offers on a non-subsidized version (like my Kindle Keyboard 3G). Now you can.
