An article about All Things Quality - in Hebrew!

In August of 2010, I was asked by Joel Montvelisky of PractiTest, if he could write about All Things Quality in a new magazine - ThinkTesting.

He explained that ThinkTesting was going to be published in Israel, would be in Hebrew, and was intended for local testers.  In each edition, Joel wanted to write a column recommending a blog, and he wanted my blog to be the first.  Of course I was honored, and quickly agreed. copyrightjoestrazzere

• October 24, 2011 - Which New England Patriot are you?

Posted By jstrazzere in Sports

I prioritize substance and preparation over style and glibness.  Plus, I like wearing hoodies.

Since it's the bye week for the New England Patriots, local writers are scrambling for material to fill the sports pages. The Boston Globe's Boston.com website posted a little quiz recently (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extras/which_patriot_are_you/).

• October 18, 2011 - According to "Brain Rules", I am a Lark

Posted By jstrazzere in Work in General

A lark. (Not actually me)

I am a morning person. I like getting up reasonably early, and find that I am most productive before noon. According to "Brain Rules" by John Medina, this apparently makes me a "lark".

In general larks report being most alert around noon and feel most productive at work a few hours before they eat lunch.  They don't need an alarm clock, because they invariably get up before the alarm rings - often before 6 a.m. Larks cheerfully report their favorite mealtime as breakfast and generally consume less coffee than non-larks. Getting increasingly drowsy in the early evening, most larks go to bed (or want to go to bed) around 9 p.m.

• October 13, 2011 - And so it goes

Posted By jimhazen

Over the last week or so the computer industry has lost two giants/innovators.  First being Steve Jobs.  Nuff said on that one.  Second is Dennis Ritchie, co-creator of the C programming language and UNIX.  I think the following comment by a reader of an article about Dennis Ritchie is an appropriate RIP for him:

#include
int main(int argc, char** argv).
{
...
fprintf(stdout, "Goodbye World!\n");.
exit(0);.
}

For those of you who cut your professional teeth in programming with C you know this is a play on the famous "Hello World!".

I learned C my last year of college in 1986 and it helped me get my first job in programming/testing at a commercial software company.  I've used the language off and on over the years for various things (like LoadRunner web scripting).  I have an original copy of "The C Programming Language" by Kerninghan & Ritchie buried somewhere in all my books.

As a tribute to both Steve Jobs and Dennis Ritchie I say thank you for your contributions, and for providing me with a career and livelyhood for the last 23 years.  I tip my glass to you.

RIP.

• October 10, 2011 - An Excel-Based Status Report Template

Posted By jstrazzere in QA

When reporting status to my boss, we have worked out a format that works well for both of us. It conveys an entire year's worth of information, yet lets us focus on just the past few weeks as we discuss it in our weekly one-on-one meeting. I can also print just the currently-relevant portion easily, and bring it with me.

• September 22, 2011 - What's Missing From Your Resume?

Posted By jstrazzere in QA

Hi there. I'm a resume, and I represent a candidate for the open position. Filter me.

I had been trying to fill an open position for quite some time.

Now that we are part of a big corporation, the hiring process involved the creation of a job description and inputting it into the system, and a discussion with the (remote) internal recruiter. We talked about the needs of the position, the characteristics of a good candidate, and the technical skills that would help a person succeed in this role.

• September 9, 2011 - QA Is Not A Verb

Posted By jstrazzere in QA

QA

qual·i·ty as·sur·ance

Noun: The maintenance of a desired level of quality in a service or product, especially by means of attention to every stage of the process of delivery or production.

QA is not a verb.  QA stands for Quality Assurance.

So when you say "can you please QA this build", you are asking "can you please Quality Assurance this build?"  That's probably not what you meant.

• August 23, 2011 - People Are Not Fungible!

Posted By jstrazzere in QA

FUN·GI·BLE

[fuhn-juh-buhl]
adjective Law.(especially of goods) being of such nature or kind as to be freely exchangeable or replaceable, in whole or in part, for another of like nature or kind.
Origin:

1755–65; Medieval Latin fungibilis,  equivalent to Latin fung ī )to perform the office of + -ibilis

Money is fungible. One bill can be freely exchanged for another. Gasoline is basically fungible. You can fill your car up at one station or another without worrying that you are putting something different in your gas tank.

But people are not fungible!
